2004 Tsunami Relief
Tsunami came into English at the end of the 19th century. It is a Japanese word from two elements, tsu "harbor" and nami "waves." A tsunami is series of great ocean waves created by submarine earth movements caused by earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, or landslides beneath the ocean. A tsunami may also be caused by an asteroid striking the earth. The plural is tsunamis or tsunami and the adjective form is tsunamic. (Dictionary.com entries for tsunami.)

The most destructive tsunami before the one on December 26, 2004 occurred following the eruption of the volcano Krakatoa in the East Indies on August 27, 1883, when over 36,000 people were killed. The U.S. Geological Survey site offers complete information for those interested in learning more about this and previous tsunamis.

Help Support The Asian Earthquake and Tsunami Appeal
On the 26th of Dec, 2004 a massive earthquake measuring 9 on the Richter scale occurred off the coast of the Indonesian Island of Sumatra. The earthquake caused a devastating Tsunami (tidal wave) which reached from Malaysia in the east all the way west to Africa country of Somalia.
The Problems at Hand
Aid is desperately needed both in the short and long terms. In the short term money is needed to help clothe, feed and provide shelter to the victims of this terrible disaster. Medicine and medical supplies are urgently required to treat the injured, with fresh water and water purification tablets needed to prevent the spread of disease.
In the long term a huge amount of money will be needed to rebuild homes, roads and other basic infrastructure. Indonesia has estimated that it will take around 4 years to rebuild the Northern city of Banda Aceh alone.

BANDA ACEH, Indonesia (AP) - Health officials plan to go door to door and tent to tent with mosquito-killing spray guns beginning Friday to head off a looming threat that one expert says could kill 100,000 more people around the tsunami disaster zone: malaria.
The devastation and heavy rains are creating conditions for the largest area of mosquito breeding sites Indonesia has ever seen, said the head of the aid group anchoring the anti-malaria campaign on Sumatra island. The pools of salt water created by the Dec. 26 tsunami have been diluted by seasonal rains into a brackish water that mosquitos love.
While the threat of cholera and dysentery outbreaks is diminishing by the day because clean water is increasingly getting to tsunami survivors, the danger of malaria and dengue fever epidemics is increasing, said Richard Allan, director of the Mentor Initiative, a public health group that fights malaria epidemics.
The death toll from the earthquake and tsunami has topped 157,000 across 11 countries after Indonesia added nearly 4,000 more to its tally. Allan warned that an outbreak of malaria could take an additional 100,000 lives around the Indian Ocean if authorities don't act quickly.
"The combination of the tsunami and the rains are creating the largest single set of (mosquito) breeding sites that Indonesia has ever seen in its history," he said Thursday in an interview with The Associated Press.
Asked about World Health Organization warnings that disease could double the tsunami death toll across affected areas, Allan said: "If anything, I think they are being conservative. Three-quarters of those deaths could be from malaria."
The World Health Organization said Thursday that seven cases of malaria have been confirmed in Aceh province. They are popping up now both because malaria season is just beginning and because a reporting system has been put in place over the last few days.
Relief workers in Aceh province on Sumatra island, meanwhile, warned that new rules requiring them to travel with armed escorts could cause bottlenecks in delivering aid and compromise their arms-length status from Indonesia's military.
"We discourage such actions because it blurs the distinction between humanitarian and military efforts here," said Eileen Burke of Save the Children.
Burke said her group has so far had no escorts - or problems - with their work in Sigli, about 60 miles from the provincial capital, Banda Aceh.
Rebels who have waged a low-level war for a separate homeland in northern Sumatra for 30 years reaffirmed their commitment to a cease-fire they declared hours after the tsunami.
Still, there have been unconfirmed reports of isolated skirmishes between Indonesian soldiers and rebels since the tsunami.
Vice President Jusuf Kalla said the government welcomed the rebels' declaration of a cease-fire. "Of course we welcome it. Indonesia will also make efforts toward it," Kalla said in Jakarta, the capital.
Indonesia's moves - which include an order that aid workers declare their travel plans or face expulsion - highlight its sensitivities over foreign involvement in the humanitarian effort, especially that of foreign troops.
Indonesia wants foreign troops out of the country by late March. The United States has the largest presence by far in south Asia with about 13,000 troops - almost all offshore.
However, State Department spokesman Richard Boucher said Indonesian authorities had informed the United States there is no departure deadline for U.S. troops.
"Nobody is asking us to go home," Boucher said. "The Indonesian statement about three months, they tell us, was intended as an estimate about how long the military part of the operation might be necessary."
The Committee to Protect Journalists on Thursday protested the restrictions on aid workers, which also apply to reporters. "Unrestricted access to information is absolutely crucial during this relief effort," CPJ Executive Director Ann Cooper said. "We call on Indonesian authorities to drop the restrictions immediately."
U.N. humanitarian chief Jan Egeland said the overall tsunami relief effort was progressing well except in Sumatra, where "huge problems" remain.
"It is still an uphill battle in the region," Egeland said in New York.
Survivors among the tens of thousands living in refugee camps in Banda Aceh have welcomed the foreign troops, who have been flying helicopter aid missions to otherwise inaccessible areas and running field hospitals.
"If they leave, we will starve," said Syarwan, 27, a tailor who is living with some 45 relatives under a tarp at a camp.
The cornerstone of the anti-malaria offensive is an insecticide spraying operation, where fumigators will walk from house to house in all neighborhoods of Banda Aceh.
They will spray the walls and put a small chalk mark on the outside of the front door as they leave so that no homes are left out and locations covered can be accurately mapped.
The tents in the refugee camps dotted around the city will also be sprayed, but those are home to only a tiny fraction of the population. Most people have been taken in by other families.
In communities along the west coast of Sumatra where almost all buildings were wiped out, the main defense will be pesticide-impregnated plastic sheeting, which villagers use for shelter.
"This will be the first situation where there is an incredible threatening epidemic and where if we get everything in place without obstruction ... we have a chance of stemming the starting point of an epidemic which otherwise will undoubtedly happen," Allan said.
Although malaria is endemic in the area, meaning it is widespread under normal circumstances and the local population is used to getting repeatedly infected, that does not provide protection from any outbreak that might emerge from the tsunami.
"They are even more likely to get sick. A lot of them have already got diarrhea, poor nutrition. They are stressed, they've got multiple infections already and their immune systems are weakened," Allan said. "Any immunity they had is gone."

An odd storie

By DAVID ROYSE
p {margin:12px 0px 0px 0px;}
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - A 10-year-old girl who wanted to open a lemonade stand to raise money for tsunami victims saw her plan hit a brick wall, thanks to government regulations.
All 10-year-old Carolyn Lipsick wanted to do was help kids hurt by the tsunami, because, she says, "you can't just think of yourself, you have to think of other people."
When her mom called the city of Miami Beach to find out what to do about getting a license, the answer wasn't promising: There is a roadside-vendor ban in Miami Beach.
"I got really, really mad," said Carolyn.
It was all a big misunderstanding, the city now says. They wouldn't have shut down the fourth-grader if she had opened some sort of stand, Miami Beach spokeswoman Nannette Rodriguez said.
But in the end, the confusion may have been the best thing that could have happened to Carolyn. A TV station reported her license woes, and before she knew it, Carolyn found herself being whisked to Tallahassee by a politician.
"It bothers me to see any child shut down," said state Chief Financial Officer Tom Gallagher, who paid for her trip to the Capitol.
On Monday, Carolyn was selling lemonade and cookies at the state Capitol right outside Gallagher's office, and doing pretty good business.
"I feel really good how it's turning out so far," said Carolyn.
On Monday she raised $492 selling lemonade to people in the Capitol. Gallagher then chipped in an additional $8 to make it an even $500, a spokeswoman in his office said.
"I feel like I've been useful to other people in other places," Carolyn said.

BANDA ACEH, Indonesia (AP) - Indonesia's military asked aid groups in tsunami-stricken areas Monday to draw up a list of international relief workers - and to report on their movements - as fears arose for the safety of foreigners helping survivors in a region wracked by rebellion long before the waves hit.
The request underlined the unease with which Indonesia has faced the growth of the biggest aid operation in history, replete with foreign soldiers and civilian humanitarian workers.
Indonesian authorities have long been wary of foreigners' presence in the tsunami-stricken Aceh province, where separatists have been fighting government troops for more than 20 years. Foreigners were banned from the province at the northern tip of Sumatra island until the earthquake hit Dec. 26, touching off the tsunami.
Although the government has portrayed the rebels as ruthless killers willing to attack aid convoys and use refugee camps as hideouts, the military has yet to offer evidence to back its claims. Clashes between Indonesian troops and separatists have subsided since the disaster.
However, security concerns have also been heightened by the appearance of an Islamic extremist group with alleged links to al-Qaida. The group, Laskar Mujahidin, which has been involved in armed clashes with Christians in other parts of Indonesia, is distributing aid and has promised not to attack foreigners.
United Nations staff in Aceh are on high alert and armed guards patrol their compounds.
Joel Boutroue, head of the U.N. relief effort in Aceh, said he did not believe Indonesia was trying to impede aid efforts with its request for information.
"It's normal they want to know where people are," he said. "I think it's a legitimate concern for the security of relief workers, considering the environment in which we're working."
In the hard-hit village of Meulaboh, residents watched the landing of U.S. troops bringing aid with wonder and relief.
"We have lost everything. We can't think about the future," said Rajadin Amkar, who lost his wife and newborn daughter. "They can think about these things. It's reassuring."
Only about 10 Marines landed Monday, because of Indonesian government concerns about security and the presence of foreign troops. U.S. military helicopters have been bringing in aid for more than a week.
About 100 Marines also went ashore in southern Sri Lanka for the first time, bringing heavy machinery to clear devastated areas. Dozens of residents converged on the palm-tree studded beach in Koggala town to watch as the Americans - most of them loaded down with heavy rucksacks - waded through the surging waves.
President Bush said Monday the United States has a duty to continue helping the tsunami's victims but he did not put any more money behind his commitment for long-term assistance. After hearing Secretary of State Colin Powell's firsthand report of damage in the region, Bush told reporters "we'll see" if the United States will give more than the $350 million in relief already pledged.
Canada, meanwhile, increased its funding for tsunami relief from $65 million to $345 million Monday, following criticism that Ottawa had given too little, too late. The new funding includes $215 million in emergency aid and $130 million over five years for reconstruction.
In Indonesia, fears of epidemic increased after medical teams detected two unconnected cases of measles and quickly vaccinated more than 1,000 people in nearby villages. Altogether, UNICEF is vaccinating some 600,000 survivors in Sumatra's devastated regions.
Relief supplies to Aceh province were halted briefly by the crash of a U.S. Seahawk helicopter. The chopper went down in a rice paddy about 500 yards from the airport in Banda Aceh, the provincial capital and the hub of the aid effort.
Lt. Cmdr. John M. Daniels, a U.S. military spokesman aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln, said one person fractured an ankle and another suffered a dislocated hip. The other eight sailors on board suffered "no significant injuries," he said.
He blamed the Monday morning crash on a "possible mechanical failure." U.S. authorities said there was no indication the helicopter had been shot down.
Meanwhile, Indonesia's government promised to intensify efforts to recover - and bury - tens of thousands of victims of the tsunami, which killed more than 150,000 people in 11 countries. Workers dug into the soft earth in the driving rain, hoisting the corpses into water-filled pits and heaping dirt over them.
Welfare Minister Alwi Shihab said 58,281 bodies had been buried in the shattered northern tip of Sumatra and some 50,000 more were "scattered" around the region.
Soldiers in gas masks moved debris in an effort to clear rubble and free corpses entombed in flattened buildings. Their stench still hangs over some areas of the provincial capital.
In Thailand, by contrast, forensics experts exhumed hundreds of bodies to extract DNA samples amid concerns they may include Westerners misidentified as Thais. The bodies had initially been buried in sandy trenches north of Khao Lak because there were not enough refrigerated containers to hold them.
Mourners in Sweden, one of the Western countries hardest hit, gathered in solidarity and sadness.
In Stockholm's City Hall, King Carl XVI Gustaf addressed the grief experienced in the Scandinavian country of 9 million. "Just imagine if I, like a king in the fairy tales, could put everything right again and end this by saying that they lived happily ever after," the king said. "But I am just another mourner."
Sweden has 637 people confirmed missing in Thailand. Fifty-two Swedes have been confirmed dead.
